THE MOON IS BEAUTIFUL, ISN'T IT?
“The moon is beautiful, isn’t it?” is a poetic way of saying I love you in Japan. During Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki’s (1867-1916) teaching years, he supposedly overheard a student translating “I love you” rather awkwardly into its literal and direct translation. Soseki believed—as a product of his time and culture in the Meiji period (1868 to 1912) —that this direct translation rejected Japanese sensibility. Thus, this more subtle, nuanced translation of “the moon is beautiful…” was born which has been widely used by literary enthusiasts in modern times.
Additionally, there are no written proof of this actual phrase was used by Soseki; there is a document that were found recently that states that his actual words were “The Moon looks blue” as the alternative “I love you.”
This series were created with the story in mind with white diamond or blue sapphire to capture the poetic translation to express “I love you.”
